The J. Stewart Walker, Jr. Sailing Complex was dedicated on May 15, 1999, as the new home for the College of Charleston sailing. The complex is located in the Patriots Point Marina in Mt. Pleasant, SC, just across the Cooper River Bridge from the Charleston peninsula.
Within the floating dock formated complex, the Chrisman Sailing Center stands as a unique building with innovative features including outside sail retrieval, two maintenance bays, a team room and a loft for storage and office use. The more than 400 feet of custom floating docks, named the Cato Docks, moor and store the fleet of dinghies, Lasers and J-22’s.
The complex is situated next to the World War II destroyer Laffey, an exhibit in the Patriots Point Maritime Museum which is adjacent to the marina. The Laffey provides much-needed protection from winds and waves, but still has quick and simple access to the harbor.
The new venue provides more and varied sites for team practice and home regattas. Opportunities exist for wave, current, shift and velocity conditionns to be tailored to the needs for particular team practices.
The Walker sailing complex was made possible solely through donor funding, and is a unique and appropriate home for the College of Charleston Sailing Team.
