Softball Returns to Action to Host Charleston Southern
GLANCING AT THE COUGARS
CofC will return to action for the first time since a doubleheader against UNC Greensboro back on Saturday, April 21. This CSU doubleheader could serve as a tune-up for the Cougars who close out the regular season this weekend with a three-game Southern Conference set at Elon before descending on Boone, N.C., for the SoCon Championships beginning Wednesday, May 9.
Carly Corthell (Reno, Nev.) leads the team in batting after a red-hot month of April in which she hit .442 (19-for-43) while starting in all 15 games for CofC. Over the course of the month she drove in eight RBIs and added three doubles and a home run. She also drew three walks and a hit by pitch and successfully executed five sacrifice bunts.
On the year, Corthell now bats .328 with 14 RBIs and a team-high 19 stolen bases.
Ashton Jarrett (Hanahan, S.C.) comes into the game with a .327 batting average and is one of four Cougars to start in every single game this season.
Kelsey Hodgson (Woodstock, Ga.) is batting .306 on the year with a team-high 19 extra-base hits. Hodgson is tied with Lizzy Vaughn (Placerville, Calif.) with three triples to lead the Cougars who rank 24th nationally as a team in triples per game.
Hodgson, Vaughn and Kristy Giragosian (Charlotte, N.C.) are the other three Cougars to start in all 48 games this season.
The Cougars have rallied behind solid pitching and defense all season long. Stephanie Saylors (Easley, S.C.) with her 1.56 ERA continues to lead the SoCon and ranks 34th in the entire country. Her 10 shutouts on the year also lead the league and rank 10th in the NCAA.
Hope Klicker (Walla Walla, Wash.) has shown an impeccable ability to hit her spots in the circle this season and ranks eighth in the country in walks allowed per seven innings at 0.96.
SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS
The Lady Bucs are also emerging from a long hiatus and played their most recent games over the same weekend as the Cougars' last games. CSU dropped two-out-of-three to Big South rival Gardner Webb on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22. The Bucs dropped both ends of the Saturday doubleheader but regrouped to claim the Sunday finale in blowout fashion.
Linzy Rother used a first-inning grand slam to springboard her to a CSU single-game record seven-RBI outing as the Bucs cruised to an 8-1 in that Sunday finale.
Kristin Kellher has been the regular leadoff hitter for the Bucs and is hitting .307 on the season and has drawn a team-high 26 walks. She is the only regular starter hitting over .300 for the Bucs this season.
Jana Matthews leads the team in RBI production with 28 out of the cleanup spot in the lineup.
Morgan Dowdy has done the bulk of the work in the pitching circle this season and posts a 2.00 ERA and 16-11 record after 196.1 innings pitched. She has struck out 124 hitters this season.
Jennifer Giles is the Bucs' other regular pitcher and has thrown 84.1 innings in the circle with a 2.49 ERA and 9-9 record thus far.
These games will mark the 66th and 67th meeting between these two Holy City rivals. The Cougars control a 38-27 advantage and swept the last doubleheader, 3-0 and 3-1, the teams played at Patriots Point. Saylors recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts in game one of that doubleheader.
The Cougars came home empty handed the most recent time the teams met, however, when the Cougars were swept at CSU on Wednesday, April 18.
MULTIMEDIA AVAILABLE FOR THE DOUBLEHEADER
The production team will be back in action this weekend with a full webstream of all three games of the series. CofCSports.com will provide both the live webstream and live stats with animated play-by-play.
The webstream requires a subscription but offers a multiple-camera broadcast with play-by-play commentary and analysis. The live stats are available at no charge.
