SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The College of Charleston's freshman catcher Mackenzie Maples was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season.
Maples (Corona, Calif.) hit .529 in the final week of the regular season, going 9-for-17 at the plate in the Cougars' 3-2 week. The freshman drove in a team-high six RBIs and her two doubles and a triple helped her record a .765 slugging percentage.
The Cougar catcher was perfect behind the plate with 23 putouts and one assist and a 1.000 fielding percentage.
On the season, Maples is now batting .311 with 25 RBIs and 10 extra-base hits.
Maples and the rest of the CofC softball team open play in the SoCon Championships on Wednesday, May 9 in Boone, N.C., on the campus of Appalachian State. The third-seeded Cougars will take on sixth seed Western Carolina in the third game of the tournament scheduled for 2 p.m.
