CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite a third straight double-double from Afreyea Tolbert and a 16-point performance from freshman Jasmine Carter, the College of Charleston women’s basketball team fell at home on Thursday, 64-60, to the Tigers of Towson University.
The Cougars (10-8, 3-2)) forced 15 turnovers against the Tigers and registered eight players on the score sheet, but it wasn’t enough as a 22.9% second half shooting performance allowed the Tigers (9-9, 3-2) to walk away with the victory.
In an evenly-played first half that featured seven ties and 12 lead changes, the Cougars took an early 8-5 lead following consecutive three-pointers from senior sharpshooter Alyssa Frye (Chester, Va.).
Towson would respond, however, taking a five point advantage in to the locker rooms after Tiger point-guard Dominique Johnson hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give her team a 34-29 lead – the largest by either team to that point.
The Cougars finished the first half with the edge on the glass, 22-20, while Towson guard Tanisha McTiller led all scorers with 16 points.
In the second half, the Cougars continued to claw away at the Tiger advantage, eventually taking a one point lead with 13:50 to play following a great assist from Erin Hall (Norcross, Ga.) to Carter, who calmly finished strong at the basket to give her team a 41-40 lead.
While neither team found buckets easy to come by over the final 12 minutes, it was Towson who managed to take control of the game, going up by as many as 10 points with just 2:24 to play.
From there, the Cougars mounted a courageous come-back, cutting the deficit to just three with 17 seconds remaining, but McTiller – who finished with a game high 24 points – knocked down one of two from the charity stripe late to seal the game.
Next up for the College is a Sunday clash with 2013 NCAA tournament regional semi-finalist, Delaware, at TD Arena with tip-off set for 2 p.m.
