In 2012-13, head coach Bruce Zimmerman will enter his fourteenth season as men's and women's head swimming & diving coach at the College of Charleston. During his tenure, the Cougars have set and broken more than 140 men's and women's school records. Zimmerman has led the Cougars to five conference championships, one with the women in 2001 in the Southern States conference and three with the men, in 2003 in the Southern States and in 2008, 2009 and 2012 in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA).

The Cougars put together one of the best seasons under Zimmerman in 2011-12 as he won his fifth Coach of the Year honor and third in the CCSA. The men's squad knocked off Davidson and won the 2011-12 CCSA team championship behind first-place finishes from Peter Gibbons, Pablo Ortiz and Greg Karel. The women's team scored a program-best 267 points at the championships as Sarah Boyle took home the first gold-medal finish in program history, winning the 200 back. The women also earned 2012 CSCAA Scholar All-America status.

In 2010-11, Zimmerman led the men's squad to a third place finish at the CCSA Championships while the women's team finished seventh. 26 members of both squads were selected to the CCSA All-Academic list.

Zimmerman was named the CCSA Men's Coach of the Year in both the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons for his efforts in guiding the squad to the first conference titles in in the newly formed CCSA conference. He also helped develop athletes such as Randy Buchanan, who was named the 2009 Men's Swimmer of the Year following an outstanding performance at the CCSA Championships.

Buchanan was the program's first NCAA Division I Championship provisional qualifier which he accomplished in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Buchanan was then joined by multiple school-record holder Matthew Sherrier who became a provisional qualifier in 2011.

The 2002-03 season in the Southern States Conference (SSC) marked a milestone for both the Cougars and Zimmerman. The men's team won the Southern States Swimming and Diving Championships, while the women's team placed fourth. Zimmerman was named the Swimming Coach of the Year while diving coach Mike Diamond was named Diving Coach of the Year. Zimmerman was also named the Women's Coach of the Year in 2001.

Zimmerman joined the College of Charleston in 1999 following nine years as the assistant men's swimming and diving coach at Indiana University. While there, his duties included planning and implementing training sessions, recruiting and keeping of team records.

Additionally, he has also served as coach and camp director for the Indiana Swimming Analysis Camp from June 1991 through May 1999 and as a graduate assistant swim coach at South Carolina from August 1989 to January 1990.

Zimmerman took over the reins of the program from longtime CofC coach Bill King who retired at the end of the 1998-99 season after serving as head swim coach for 22 years.

Aside from his coaching duties, he also serves as Director of the Stern Center pool.

Zimmerman received his undergraduate degree in physical education from Bradley.
