Cougars Set to Host Southern Conference Championships
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The championship portion of the season is right around the corner as the College of Charleston men's and women's cross country teams host the Southern Conference Championships Saturday Oct. 29 at Trophy Lakes on Johns Island.
The event will feature the men's 8K race at 10:00a.m., followed by the women's 5K race at 10:45a.m. The awards ceremony will conclude the championships.
On the women's side sophomore Dena O'Brien comes in with the second fastest time in the conference (17:11.75) over 5,000-meters, which she ran at the Charlotte Invitational earlier this year.
On the men's side sophomore Andrew Nelson has the best 8,000-meter time (25:47.78) with four having run under 26 minutes.
Both teams have more depth this year, which should help them have a successful meet.
"We are very excited to be hosting the championships this year," Head Coach Amy Seago said. "We feel very comfortable on this course and it's just a matter of everyone going out and performing well."
Last year the women finished seventh and the men finished eighth at the championship meet hosted by Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. O'Brien finished fifth in the women's race and was named the conference Freshman of the Year. Senior Kristen Wolfe finished 11th and earned a spot on the All-SoCon Second Team. For the men, sophomore Andrew Nelson made the All-SoCon Freshman Team as he finished 28th overall and was the third best freshman.
Results from the meet will be posted on CofCSports.com.
