CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Louisville, Ky., for the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Regional Championship Nov. 12 at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park.
The Southeast Regional, one of nine regionals in the country will feature 37 men's teams and 39 women's teams. The top-two teams in each race and four individuals from non-advancing teams will automatically qualify for the NCAA National Championship Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind.
The men's 10,000-meter race is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, while the women's 6,000-meter race will go off at approximately 11:15 a.m.
The last time out for the Cougars was the Southern Conference Championships in which the Cougars hosted the meet at Trophy Lakes. The women's team finished fifth, their best ever finish and the men finished eighth.
Sophomore Dena O'Brien led the women as she finished third in school-recording setting time of 17:05.40 for the 5K race. Freshman Hayley McMahon finished 24th and was the fifth-best freshman, earning her a spot on the All-Freshman Team. O'Brien was named to the All-SoCon First Team.
On the men's side sophomore Andrew Nelson and senior Eric Robertson came within about two seconds of breaking the school 8K mark. Nelson finished 34th in 25:35.09 and Robertson was right behind him in 25:35.17.
CofC Head Coach Amy Seago said she thinks her teams are in a good place heading into the meet.
"This is one of the biggest meets we will be at as a team this year," she said. "It will be a great level of competition and I expect us to rise to the occasion and embrace the opportunity."
