CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. - College of Charleston men's golfer Zach Munroe (Charlotte, N.C.) needed 19 holes as he persevered and defeated Michael Schoolcraft to advance to the round of 32 in the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club.

Munroe got off to a quick start with two birdies on his five holes to build a two shot lead. Schoolcraft came back and birdied holes seven and nine and by the 13th  hole was two up for the match.

Munroe kept fighting and narrowed the lead to one with a par on the 521-yard par four 14th hole. Schoolcraft was still one up going into the 17th hole and Munroe birdied it to get the match to all square going into the 18th hole.

Both players bogeyed the 18th hole so it went to sudden death format and Munroe won the 19th hole as he bogeyed it and Schoolcraft double-bogeyed the par-four first hole of the course.

"I'm really proud of Zach and congratulate him on a great match," CofC head coach Mark McEntire said. "I want guys on my team that are going to fight and that is what Zach did and it paid off for him."

Munroe will play Todd White tomorrow in the round of 32. White, a 43-year old native of Spartanburg, S.C., was a four-time All-Southern Conference selection at Furman and is a member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.
