CHINA GROVE, N.C. - College of Charleston men's golfer Zach Munroe shot rounds of 66-67 at the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship Sectional Qualifying Tournament as he earned a spot in the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship August 13-19 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colo.
Munroe, the Charlotte, N.C. native finished tied for second-place with a 7-under 133 score at the Warrior Golf Club in China Grove, N.C. Out of the field of 84 golfers five earned spots in the USGA Championship event.
"We are thrilled for Zach and congratulate him on this achievement," CofC men's golf head coach Mark McEntire said. "This is a tremendous opportunity for him to compete against the top amateur players in the world and represent our program as well."
Munroe transferred to the College of Charleston this summer after playing his freshman year at North Carolina. He continues his excellent play this summer as he finished third-place at the Rice Planters Amateur June 18-23 in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and fifth-place at the North Carolina Amateur Championship June 17 in Durham, N.C.
Munroe is the second player in two years from CofC to qualify for this prestigious event. In 2010 John Duke Hudson competed in the U.S. Amateur Championship at the Chambers Bay course in University Place, Wash.
