CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. - College of Charleston men's golfers Zach Munroe and Alex Ellis began play in the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship Monday along with 309 of the best amateur players in the world.
After getting off to a rocky start with two bogeys, Monroe sank four birdies in his next nine holes to card a 1-under 70, which puts him tied for 34th in the tournament.
Ellis made two birdies, but struggled coming home and shot a 5-over 75.
After tomorrow's round the top 64 golfers will qualify for match play, which will ultimately determine a champion.
CofC head coach Mark McEntire said he is very happy having these two represent the College of Charleston.
"Alex and Zach have worked very hard to get where they are," McEntire said. "I am extremely proud of them and hope they can both play well tomorrow and get into match play."
