CHARLESTON, S.C. – Following two crucial victories last week, the College of Charleston men’s soccer team garnered a pair of weekly honors both on a Colonial Athletic Association and national level.
Freshman attacker Xavier Rajpaul was named the CAA Rookie of the Week and senior goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk was named the goalkeeper of the National Team of the Week by College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer, leading publications on collegiate soccer.
Rajpaul (Port of Spain, Trinidad) scored a pair of goals as CofC posted CAA victories over James Madison (2-1) and Northeastern (1-0) to remain in the hunt for a tournament berth. The freshman scored the game’s lone goal with 16 minutes to play against Northeastern and gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead against JMU with a goal in the 33rd minute. He has four goals for the season.
He played all 90 minutes of both contests and scored his weekly brace on just three shot attempts. He now has a team-high four goals on the season.
The national pundits at CSN and TDS took notice of Heemskerk’s (Zaandam, Netherlands) role in the Cougars’ undefeated week after returning to the pitch from being sidelined by an eight-week back injury,
He had six stops including several big saves in the Cougars’ 2-1 win over James Madison and had five saves to lead the College to a 1-0 win over Northeastern.
His 11 saves were good for a .917 save percentage and 0.50 goals-against average on the week.
The Cougars are peaking at the right time as their two wins preserved their hunt for the looming CAA postseason.
The regular season culminates when the Cougars host league-leading Drexel needing to come away with at least part of the result to clinch a tournament berth. A tie could be enough if the Cougars get help from favorable results around the league, but a win locks CofC in to one of six bids to the Championship.
Kickoff from Patriots Point is slated for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
