Cole Rakar’s one-out, single in the bottom of the 11th inning drove in Gabe Marchant with the game-winning run leading the College of Charleston to a 13-12 victory over 26th-ranked Coastal Carolina in college baseball action before 338 fans at Patriots Point Stadium on Tuesday.
Charleston, which improved to 4-0, plays host to 13th-ranked Clemson in a 5:00 start on Friday. Coastal Carolina fell to 4-1.
Trailing 11-6 entering the ninth inning, Charleston's Jeremie Tice had an RBI single and Marchant a three-run homer that cut Coastal Carolina's lead to 11-10. Matt Leed's two-out, run-scoring single scored Corey Ashner and tied the game at 11-all.
Both teams scored in the 10th inning. In the 11th inning, Marchant was hit by a pitch to start the 11th inning, moved to second on Ashner sacrifice bunt and scored when Rakar lined the first pitch from Kent Altman in to right center for the game-winning hit.
Jesse Simpson (2-0) picked up the win in relief allowing a run on one hit over two innings with four strikeouts. Altman (0-1) suffered the loss surrendering two runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.
