"This was a wonderful night to celebrate a very good year," CofC Director of Athletics Joe Hull said. Congratulations to all of the coaches, student-athletes and support staff. You represented The College, yourself and your team very well. I hope you are all pleased and proud with your efforts this year.

"One of the reasons our society likes athletics so much is the great talent and skill you display. Another reason is that you put yourself out there, you strive for victory and you risk defeat publicly. Finally, for the seniors, your lives are about to change greatly. You should feel prepared for the next challenges as you move forward, do your best, do what is right and remember you are always welcome at your college home - the College of Charleston."

For the second year in a row, the CofC softball team won the 2012 Cougar Cup, which is presented annually to the team with the most participation points in the NCAA Student-Athlete Development commitment areas of athletic excellence, academic excellence, personal development, career development and service.

Senior women's tennis standout Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) was honored with the prestigious J. Stewart Walker Cup, which the highest award given by the athletics department to a deserving student-athlete. The award is named after J. Stewart Walker, Jr., a 1978 CofC graduate, who was very active in athletics until his death in 1983. The other five finalists for the award included Leigh Whittaker, Sarah Schaidle, Matt Sherrier, Emily Smith and Sarah Somes of sailing.

"I just want to thank my teammates, coaches, friends and family," Newman said. "Without their support, this would not be possible. Everyone here deserved it and it's truly an honor."

Academically, 256 student-athletes were named scholar-athletes this school year. To qualify, a student-athlete must earn a term grade-point average of at least a 3.0 during the spring and fall 2011 terms.

The CofC women's tennis team turned in the highest annual average team GPA in 2011, while the men's basketball team had the most improved annual average team GPA. Caroline Newman also earned the Academic MVP Award given to the graduating senior with the highest cumulative GPA at the end of the fall prior to graduation.

Winn Query was honored with the Myrt Riggs Fan of the Year Award along with Maroon Mayhem student supporter, Andrew Catapano, as the Student Fan of the Year and College of Charleston Treasurer, David Katz, as the Anita Van de Erve Staff/Faculty Fan of the Year.
