MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Sophomore RF Thomas Brittle (Cross, S.C./Berkeley) had three hits and senior 1B Greg Blake (Westerly, R.I./Lake City CC) blasted a solo home run as College of Charleston took advantage of five Charleston Southern errors to defeat the Buccaneers 12-7 Wednesday evening at Patriots Point. The Cougars improve to 8-1 on the season, while Charleston Southern falls to 2-6.
CSU took an early 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Matt Still in the first inning, but Charleston responded in the bottom half of the frame on a two-run double down the left-field line by junior Jose Rodriguez (Hialeah, Fla./Broward College). The Cougars added three more runs in the second to take a 5-1 lead.
The Bucs cut the deficit to 5-3 in third inning on a bases-loaded walk by Still and a RBI groundout by Walt Quattlebaum. The teams traded single runs in the fifth inning, CSU scoring on a solo home run by Tyler Thornburg and the Cougars picking up a run on Blake's first round-tripper of the season.
Charleston added two runs in the sixth as Brittle scored on throwing error by Drew Woodall and junior DH Kolby Epley (Yadkinville, N.C./Forbush) plated fellow junior CF Cole Rakar (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) with a sacrifice fly to center. CSU cut Charleston's lead to 8-6 in the seventh with a RBI single by Quattlebaum and a sacrifice fly by Derek Smith.
The Cougars padded the lead to 12-6 with four runs in the eighth, scoring on a RBI single by Blake and a two-run double by junior SS Jamie Holler (Rock Hill, S.C./USC Sumter JC). Junior C Rob Kral (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored the final run on a passed ball by Will Bedenbaugh. CSU closed the game's scoring with a solo home run to left in the ninth.
Freshman Jake Zokan (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley) earned his first collegiate victory, going five innings and giving up five hits and four runs with four strikeouts. Junior Heath Hembree (Cowpens, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist College) picked up his first save on the season, tossing 1.2 innings with four strikeouts. Stew Brase took the loss for the Bucs, allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits in five innings with seven strikeouts.
Charleston returns to action for a three-game series with SEC foe Alabama this weekend at Patriots Point. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. Friday and 1:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
