Cougar Baseball Falls to Alabama 6-2
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Alabama’s Taylor Dugas went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases to lead the Crimson Tide to a 6-2 win over College of Charleston Friday night at Patriots Point Stadium. The Tide improves to 7-0 with the Cougars dropping to 8-2.
Dugas started the scoring for the Tide in the second inning, driving in two runs on a single to right center field scoring Jon Kelton and Cody Trotter. Andrew Miller plated the final run of the inning as Dugas was caught in a rundown for the final out. Alabama added one at the top of the third with Ross Wilson driving in Josh Rutledge who knocked a triple down the right field line to reach base.
The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, starting with a double down the left field line from Kolby Epley (Yadkinville, N.C./Forbush). Junior Jose Rodriguez (Hialeah, Fla./Broward College) picked up the RBI, driving in Epley on a single and cutting the lead to three.
Neither team scored again until the top of the seventh when Alabama scored two for a 6-1 lead. Rutledge scored his second run of the night on a Clay Jones single and Wilson also plated his second run, scoring on a Cougar error.
Charleston added one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Epley added a run on a single to shortstop, scoring Baker Knox who reached base on a walk.
Mesa led the Cougars, going 3-for-5 with a double and a triple. Epley was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a stolen base for Charleston. Wilson and Jones added one RBI each for the Tide.
On the mound, Alabama’s Adam Morgan improved to 2-0 with the win, pitching five innings and tossing six strikeouts. Charleston’s David Peterson (Walnut Creek, Calif./Los Comas) pitched six and two-thirds innings in the loss with two strikeouts, dropping his record to 1-1.
The two teams will play the second game of series at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the final game slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
