Baseball Completes Sweep of Davidson with 8-4 Victory
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Junior C Rob Kral (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) went 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three RBI and sophomore RHP David Peterson (Walnut Creek, Calif./Los Lomas) struck out eight Davidson batters in seven innings to lead College of Charleston to a 8-4 victory over the Wildcats, completing a three-game sweep in the Southern Conference series. The Cougars upped their record to 33-12 overall, 17-7 in the SoCon, while Davidson fell to 18-26, 5-19.
For the first time in the series, Charleston put runs on the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI single to right by senior DH Justin Brewer (Greer, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist College). The base hit plated senior 1B Greg Blake (Westerly R.I./ Lake City CC), who led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a balk by Davidson starter Ryan Overcash.
The Cougars added three more runs in each of the third and fourth innings to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Junior CF Cole Rakar (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Wando) was hit by a pitch to lead off the third and Kral followed up by depositing a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right center for a two-run homer. Two outs later, Blake connected on a 2-2 pitch that cleared the same spot in right center for his 12th round-tripper of the season.
In the fourth, after the first two Cougars were retired, senior 2B Joey Bergman (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) doubled to right center and Rakar brought him home with a two-run shot to left on a 1-0 pitch from Overcash. Kral stepped into the batter's box next and crushed a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right for a seven-run advantage that brought out the Davidson head coach and sent Overcash to the bench.
Davidson showed life in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring a single run on a sacrifice fly to right by Andrew Barna and plating two more in the sixth to cut the Cougars' lead to 7-3. Sam Payne lined a RBI single to center and Barna grounded into a double play with runners on the corners for the other Davidson tally.
Charleston scored its final run in the seventh on a RBI single by junior RF Baker Knox (San Mateo, Fla./Daytona Beach CC) that brought home Blake from second and Davidson completed the scorecard with a run in the eighth on a two-base fielding error by Rakar, following a single into center by Drew Gadaire.
Peterson won his fifth straight start, improving to 7-2 on the season. The right-hander scattered six hits and allowed three runs with no walks. Sophomore LF Jose Rodriguez (Hialeah, Fla./Broward College) had a single in the fourth inning to increase his hitting streak to 12 games.
Overcash took the loss for Davidson, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 3-2/3 innings with one strikeout. Gadaire had three hits for the Wildcats.
Charleston returns to action next weekend as it hosts The Citadel in a key SoCon clash at Patriots Point. The three-game series begins Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
