Errors Hamper Baseball in 6-2 Loss to The Citadel
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel’s Matt Talley tossed a complete game and the Bulldogs took advantage of three College of Charleston errors to hand the Cougars a 6-2 loss in Southern Conference action Friday night at Riley Park. Charleston falls to 20-10 overall, 6-4 in the SoCon, while The Citadel improves to 11-19, 6-10 in the conference.
Charleston jumped on the board early with a single run in the top of the first. Redshirt-junior C Rob Kral (Randolph, N.J.) knocked a two-out single through the right side and fellow redshirt-junior 1B Matt Leeds (Boca Raton, Fla.) picked up his 45th RBI of the season with a single to right center that plated Kral.
The Citadel would score the next four runs to take a 4-1 lead, plating pairs of runs in the bottom of the first and third frames. After back-to-back singles by Nick Orvin and Drew DeKerlegand and a walk to Matt Simonelli, William Ladd drove in Orvin on a fielder’s choice and a RBI single to right by Joe Jackson gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead after the first inning.
In the third, two Cougar errors led to a pair of unearned runs for The Citadel and a 4-1 lead. Simonelli reached on a fielding error by senior 2B Jesse Mesa (Miramar, Fla.) and advanced to third on a single by Ladd. Another RBI single by Jackson plated Simonelli and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt to third by Kral allowed Ladd to come from second and score for a three-run Bulldog lead.
The Bulldogs added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh as Orvin walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by DeKerlegand. On a single up the middle by Ladd, Orvin rounded third a bit too far and was caught in a rundown, but scored as he dislodged the ball from the glove of Charleston junior RHP David Peterson (Walnut Creek, Calif.) on the way home. Ladd would later score on Jackson’s third RBI single of the game.
Charleston would plate a final run in the top of the ninth as redshirt-freshman DH Daniel Aldrich (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) doubled in Leeds from first with a shot down the right-field line. Peterson took the loss for the Cougars, allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Kral, Aldrich and redshirt-junior LF Jose Rodriguez (Hialeah, Fla.) each had two hits for Charleston.
Talley went the distance for the second straight weekend, scattering nine hits and allowing two runs with no walks and three strikeouts, including the 200th of his career. Jackson led the Bulldogs with three hits and three RBIs.
The two teams return to Riley Park for game two of the three-game series Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
