SPARTANBURG, S.C. – College of Charleston second baseman Blake Butler and outfielder Brandon Murray were named All-SoCon Second Team, the conference office announced Monday.

Butler and Murray were both named second team second base and outfield, respectively, on the coaches and media ballots.

The Cougars also had a league-high three freshman named to the All-Freshman team in starting pitcher Nathan Helvey, infielder Carl Wise and Butler. This season marked the first time that the Cougars have had three freshmen on the league All-Freshman team.

A native of Nassau, Bahamas, Murray finished sixth in the league with 53 RBIs and was second with 42 walks. In SoCon-only competition, Murray sported a .636 slugging percentage which ranked sixth in the league. His nine season home runs led the Cougars, making him the regular season team leader in HRs for the second-straight season. Murray was named a national Louisville Slugger Player of the Week after setting a school record with nine RBIs in a single game, hitting a grand slam, three-run homer and two-run double in a win at Davidson (4/14).

Butler finished the season on a tear as the Cougars’ leadoff hitter. Hailing from Greensboro, N.C., he has hit safely in 21 of his last 23 games and finished the season with a .332 batting average, ranking second on the squad. Butler sported a .433 on-base percentage and made just four errors at second base, despite moving there in the second weekend of the season. In the Cougars’ recent five-game winning streak, Butler hit .619 with nine runs and five steals, including the game-winning run in Friday’s walk-off victory. He was one of just two freshmen to earn All-SoCon Second Team honors.

Despite only starting 36 games, Wise has been an offensive dynamo in the Cougars lineup. He hit eight home runs on the season with three coming in the final weekend against GSU. His .554 slugging percentage led the team, and he reached base at a team-best .441 clip. Hailing from Lexington, S.C., Wise has played third, first and hit as the DH in the Cougars lineup, and his first career hit was a pinch-hit solo home run against Charleston Southern. Wise sported a .667 slugging percentage against SoCon-only competition which ranked fourth in the league.

Freshman hurler Nathan Helvey battled injury in the middle of the season, but still finished with 3.06 ERA and 5-3 record, the most wins of any Cougar pitcher. A native of Fort Mill, S.C., Helvey allowed just 17 earned runs and five of his 10 starts were quality starts. He helped lead a Cougar pitching staff that led the SoCon with a 3.99 ERA, earning wins over nationally-ranked South Alabama and an eight-inning, partial-shutout outing against Samford.

Elon’s Ryan Kinsella (Coaches) and WCU’s Tyler White (Media) earned Player of the Year honors, while The Citadel’s Austin Pritcher was the Pitcher of the Year. Western Carolina’s Bobby Moranda won Coach of the Year honors.
