The Cougars finished the Cougar Invitational with a 2-1 record after wins over UConn and Xavier. College of Charleston is now 5-1 on the season, while Xavier fell to 1-5.
Pegler (2-0) did not allow a hit until the seventh inning and finished with 7.0 innings pitched, one hit, no runs and five strikeouts to earn his second victory in his second start. Junior Dre Watts and senior Nick Osterman each pitched an inning of relief, respectively, to preserve the victory.
"I was really pleased that we were able to close out the weekend with a win over Xavier," said head coach Monte Lee. "We had an outstanding performance from Matt Pegler who gave up just one hit in seven innings. We had a number of two-out RBIs to get some insurance runs late. I was definitely pleased with our performance all weekend."
Senior Marty Gantt led the way offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate as he scored three runs and notched an RBI. Sophomore Daniel Aldrich and junior Cody Martin also tallied two hits and one RBI apiece.
The Cougars got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning after Gantt led off with a double. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Gantt scored on a single to right field from Martin, his fourth RBI of the season.
Gantt's second run came in the sixth inning after he reached on a leadoff walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a balk. A walk from Aldrich and a hit by pitch on junior Tyler Jackson loaded the bases and Watts earned his first RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to left.
The third run from Gantt came in the seventh inning after he hit a two-out single to score senior Rob Harding. Aldrich then tripled in Gantt in the next at-bat to make the score 4-0. The triple was the second for Aldrich in the weekend.
Xavier put one run on the board in the ninth inning after a walk from Tres Eberhardt and an RBI hit from Vinny Nittoli. The Musketeers' Tyler Koors lasted five innings as he gave up two runs and took the loss.
College of Charleston will hit the road on Tuesday for a non-conference game at Jacksonville. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
