SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team had a school-and Southern Conference-record eight of its 10 players honored with postseason all-conference awards in a vote by the league's head coaches on Tuesday.
Senior Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand) headlined the CofC honorees as the only No. 2 singles player on the six-member SoCon First Team along with top player Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.). Furman was the only school to come close to the record number of players honored with seven in 2007. Head coaches were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
"It's always nice to be recognized and I am so proud of our team," said CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo, who was named SoCon Coach of the Year for the third time of his career next to 2001 and 2010. "All of our hard work and undefeated 10-0 season in conference paid off and translated into much-deserved individual awards for our players."
Anastopoulo led the Cougars (18-7) to yet another perfect 10-0 season en route to winning the conference regular-season title for the second consecutive year. CofC will look to defend its 2010 tournament title later this week in postseason play.
Second Team all-conference selections were awarded based on position which included junior Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) at No. 3 singles, freshman Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) at No. 5 and senior Keely Mulligan (Miami, Fla.) at No. 6.
CofC also took the top two doubles positions on the second team with Hayman and sophomore Irene Viana (Paris, France) tabbed at No. 1, while senior Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga.) and junior Katie Lee (Brisbane, Australia) were slotted at No. 2.
The top-seeded Cougars will face the winner of No. 8 seed Appalachian State or No. 9 seed Wofford in the quarterfinals of the 2011 SoCon Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday, April 21, at 8:30 a.m. (ET) in Chattanooga, Tenn. Conference tournament play begins with the first round tomorrow.
