CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's and women's tennis teams welcomed back a large number of former players to their annual CofC Alumni Match held on Saturday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
It was the start to a great Homecoming Weekend which will culminate with the women's team's home opener against North Florida (0-1) on Sunday, Feb. 12, with first serve set for 1 p.m. (ET) at the CofC Tennis Center.
The Cougars (1-2) were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning with Coastal Carolina (2-0), but the morning dual match was cancelled due to forecasted cold temperatures in the 20s and 30s.
"We had a great turnout today for the alumni match," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "We thank everyone who attended and those that were here with us in spirit. We were very excited to play some tennis, share some laughs and reminisce. The women's team received their 2011 Southern Conference Championship rings at the men's basketball game versus Davidson and we were excited to have Kinsey Casey, Keely Mulligan and Emma Hayman return to Charleston to be honored."
Earlier this week, CofC, the reigning Southern Conference champions, returned to the national spotlight coming in at No. 70 in the latest Campbell/ITA Team Rankings released on Feb. 2.
The Cougars will resume competition on Sunday after coming off a convincing 4-2 victory over No. 67-ranked Winthrop on Jan. 29 as part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Durham, N.C.
"On Sunday, it will be time for us to get back into a competitive mode," Anastopoulo said. "We will face North Florida, the front runner to win the Atlantic Sun Conference title. Rookie coach Audra Cohen will have her team properly prepared and ready to challenge us to the last point. It should be a great day for college tennis."
