CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston ended the 2011 home season with a 3-0 sweep of Wofford on Sunday afternoon, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-17. A crowd of 1,725 paid tribute to seniors Elyse Chubb, Hayley Harrell and Sarah Havel as the trio were honored in the last home match of their careers.
The seniors captured the 95th win of their four-year careers and finished 31-1 in home games against Southern Conference opponents. The win also kept College of Charleston in first place in the SoCon South Division as the Cougars improved to 21-9, 12-2 on the season. Wofford fell to 13-18, 2-12 on the year.
Neither team played very efficiently throughout the match as the Cougars only hit .183 and the Terriers made 13 service errors.
Freshman Sloane White tallied 10 kills for the second straight match as she only made two errors for an attack mark of .400. Chubb made nine kills, Havel landed six kills and three blocks and Harrell made six digs and recorded her first kill of the season.
Wofford's Rachel Woodlee was the only player to reach double digits in kills (10) for the Terriers.
The Terriers hung with College of Charleston throughout most of the first and second sets, tying the game at 17 in the first set and bringing the second set to 22-21. However, the Cougars won both sets, 25-18 and 25-23.
College of Charleston raced to 12-5 lead early in the third set hitting .750 through the early goings. Wofford clawed back to as close as 14-10, but the Cougars scored five of the next six points and eventually won the set, 25-17. A block from White punctuated the win on the last play, and the Cougars celebrated the victory.
College of Charleston will play its last two regular season matches on the road, facing The Citadel on Tuesday night at 6 p.m., and UNC-Greensboro on Saturday at 7 p.m.
