ASHEVILLE, N.C. - College of Charleston controlled the first half and were up 23-20 at halftime, but No. 9 seed Wofford defeated No. 8 seed CofC , 64-53 in the first round of the 2012 Southern Conference Women's Basketball Championship held Friday at Kimmel Arena.

The game capped a 30-year coaching career for Cougars head coach Nancy Wilson, who is retiring following 17 years at the helm of the College of Charleston program.  A native of Lake City and a graduate of Coker College, Wilson, who coached all 30 years in the state of South Carolina, is one of only 24 NCAA Division I head coaches to win 500 games.

Both teams played very hard today," said Wilson following the game.  "I really thought this would be a game that came down to the wire since we had spurts where we were in control, then they had spurts where they were in control. I am very proud of this team; I have been proud of them all year long.  Our staff loves them, and we just wish them the very best in the future."

Sophomore Alyssa Frye was one of three CofC players who scored in double-figures as she led the Cougars (7-23) with 14 points. Fellow sophomores Jillian Brown (12 points) and Alexis Hicks (10 points also scored in double digits.

Wofford (13-17) gained momentum in the second half after a Latisha Harris technical foul and ejection left the Cougars shorthanded. The Terriers had four players score in double-figures led by Morgan Wrightson with 17 points.

The Cougars trailed by as many as 14 in the second half, but cut the lead to eight with 5:43 left in the game. Wofford scored two baskets to go back up 12 and stayed ahead for the rest of the game.

Wofford advances to tomorrow's quarterfinal where it will face No. 1 seed Davidson.
