CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston volleyball head coach Jason Kepner has announced an addition to the 2013 signing class, junior transfer Cara Howley.

Howley comes to the Cougars from the University of South Carolina where she played in 2011 and 2012. A native of McKinney, Texas, and McKinney-Boyd High School, Howley recorded 2.19 kills/set and 0.67 blocks/set last season as a middle blocker and opposite-side hitter with the Gamecocks. She led the team with a .294 hitting percentage which ranked 11th in the SEC.

“I am excited to add Cara to our roster next fall,” Kepner said. “She is a great representative of a student-athlete, graduating in three years and now pursuing her master’s degree at College of Charleston. She has also played all three offensive positions in one of the top conferences in the country during her time at South Carolina. She provides depth at all of the positions and her versatility will allow us to be creative with our offense. Cara is a great boost to an already exciting lineup for the fall.”

Howley averaged 2.11 kills per set in 2011, her redshirt-freshman season. She had injured her knee in 2010 and took a medical redshirt season.

She maintained excellent grades in the classroom, making the SEC Academic Honor Roll all three years at South Carolina.

Howley will join with talented newcomers Lexi Rhein and Maddie Hills on next year’s team. The Cougars are coming off a banner year in 2012 where the team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a win over a ranked Miami squad.
