CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston volleyball head coach Jason Kepner has announced two signees for the 2014 season in setter Mackenzie Cooler and middle blocker Krissy Mummey.
“I am extremely excited to add Mackenzie and Krissy to our roster next fall,” Kepner said. “They will add so much to our group of returners. They are both great on the court and in the classroom, and I couldn’t ask for two better players to represent us here at College of Charleston.”
Hailing from Bluffton, S.C., Cooler makes the trek to Charleston as Bluffton High School’s first Division I volleyball player. She was the All-Region 8AAAA Player of the Year and member of the All-State team. She was also selected to the 3A/4A All-Star team as Bluffton’s team captain and MVP. She plays for the Lowcountry Volleyball Club.
“Mackenzie is one of the best players in the state of South Carolina and is one of the top setters in the country,” Kepner said. “She is 6-1, and has the ability to play high above the net to reach any tight pass, and can be very aggressive offensively. She will give us the option to have a variety of different looks next fall and complement our other setters well.”
Cooler holds the school record for kills (1,716) in a career, and led her team to a 8AAAA Region title. Prepvolleyball.com tabbed her for its Senior Aces list after she was the lone S.C. representative on the Top 25 Freshman list in 2010. USA Volleyball named her to its A1 High Performance Team. She has shown versatility on the court, playing setter, outside hitter and middle blocker.
She has done well in the classroom as well, earning a spot on the Honor Roll and in the National Honor Society.
A middle blocker from Hudson High School in Hudson, Ohio, Mummey comes to the College of Charleston with a host of honors and accolades. She was First Team All-District and All-State Honorable Mention in Ohio. She won MVP honors from her high school N.O.C. league and on her Hudson High team.
“Krissy will add some size and depth in the middle with the loss of this current senior class,” Kepner said. “She is one of those special middles that already excels at both blocking and hitting. She is very explosive for her 6-3 frame, and is an outstanding all-around athlete. We will definitely be looking to put her skills and explosiveness to use right away in the fall.”
Mummey won Student-Athlete of the Week honors for a number of local media outlets, including the Akron Beacon Journal, WKYC and NewsNet5. She was also a finalist for the Cleveland Plain-Dealer Volleyball Player of the Year. Mummey played club volleyball for Academy Volleyball Cleveland.
Along with volleyball, Mummey played high school basketball and track at Hudson, where she became the all-time single season leader in blocks. She has also shown success in the classroom, earning membership in the National Honor Society.
