SPARTANBURG, S.C. - College of Charleston's Antwaine Wiggins (Greeneville, Tenn.), Trent Wiedeman (Suwanee, Ga.) and Adjehi Baru (Abidjan, Ivory Coast) were honored as the 2012 Southern Conference men's basketball postseason awards were announced on Tuesday.
Davidson head coach Bob McKillop was named the league's Coach of the Year, while the Wildcats' sophomore forward De'Mon Brooks was named the 2012 Player of the Year.
A pair of Wofford Terriers were also honored as senior Brad Loesing was named the Defensive Player of the Year, while guard Karl Cochran was named the league's Freshman of the Year.
Wiggins and Wiedeman garnered all-conference honors for the first time of their CofC careers. They were joined by Davidson's Jake Cohen and Brooks, along with Wofford's Kevin Giltner and Loesing. Also earning All-SoCon honors were Mike Groselle of The Citadel, Elon's Jack Isenbarger, and sophomores Eric Ferguson of Georgia Southern and Trevis Simpson of UNCG. A total of seven schools had at least one player on the all-conference team. CofC was one of only three schools to have two.
Cochran garnered a spot on the all-freshman team where he was joined by Baru, Elon's Austin Hamilton, and Samford's Tyler Hood and Raijon Kelly. CofC has now had a rookie make the all-freshman team three-straight years with Wiedeman in 2011 and Willis Hall in 2010.
The 2012 Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament begins on Friday, March 2 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C. The championship game is scheduled for Monday, March 5 at 9:00 p.m. (ET).
