CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston’s Andrew Lawrence (London, England) will participate in the 11th annual adidas Basketball Eurocamp, the most prestigious international and only officially sanctioned pre-NBA Draft camp outside of the U.S., on June 8-10 at the La Ghirada Sports Complex in Treviso, Italy.
The adidas Eurocamp invites elite players throughout Europe to participate and gain the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of scouts, coaches and general managers from a number of basketball teams and leagues from around the world, including the NBA and Euroleague, as well as gain exposure from major global media outlets. Last year’s Eurocamp was attended by 65 agents, 100 coaches and more than 250 NBA and European general managers, scouts and basketball personnel.
Lawrence, a 6-foot-1 point guard for the Cougars from 2009-13, became the first-ever men’s basketball player in program history to earn a spot on an Olympic team roster as a member of the 2012 Great Britain National Team. He was the youngest player for the UK and one of only two collegians selected to an Olympic Team among the 12 countries who qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Lawrence helped Great Britain to its first-ever Olympic win over China in tournament pool play.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to showcase my talents at this weekend’s Eurocamp,” said Lawrence, who has been working out and training in Charleston since the end of the school year.
A two-time Bob Cousy Award candidate, which is given annually to the nation’s top point guard, he closed out his four-year career being recognized by the league’s head coaches on the All-Southern Conference Team as a senior. Lawrence became the 30th player in school history to gain entrance into the 1,000-Career Point Club and ranks 22nd all-time in career scoring with 1,219 points, tied for sixth in career three-pointers made (207) and seventh all-time in career assists (393) in the CofC record books. He earned one of the first bachelor’s degrees given at the College in public health in May.
Lawrence is one of two former collegians among the 45+ NBA Draft-eligible participants at the event along with 6-foot-7 small forward and Australia native Ryan Broekhoff of Valparaiso.
Over the last 11 years, adidas Eurocamp has produced 80 players who have played or are currently playing in the NBA or Euroleague. It provides a global stage for the top international prospects to practice, compete and interview with NBA teams and other professional leagues leading up to the NBA Draft on June 27 in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Some notable European players who have attended Eurocamp in the past include Danilo Gallinari of the Denver Nuggets, Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors, Marco Belinelli of the Chicago Bulls, Nicolas Batum of the Portland Trailblazers and Marcin Gortat of the Phoenix Suns.
Players will also attend clinics and learn from current and former NBA coaches and players including Flip Saunders of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Kenneth Faried of the Denver Nuggets, Serge Ibaka and Omri Casspi of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Projected 2013 NBA Draft picks Rudy Gobert (France), Lucas Nogueira (Brazil) and Nemanja Nedovic (Serbia) will all be participating, giving an indication of the caliber of players that will be on display this weekend.
