CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston women’s basketball head coach Natasha Adair has announced the addition of Courtney Gardner for the class of 2013.

Gardner, a native of Snellville, Ga., comes to the College of Charleston from Brookwood High School and received a position rank of 48 from ESPN High School Girls Basketball and a grade of 88.

Gardner, a 5' 11'' power forward/point guard averaged 14.6 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per game her senior year and was a McDonalds All-American Nominee. For her high school career, Gardner scored over 1,000 points and pulled down over 700 rebounds.

“I’m excited to have Courtney and the Gardner family join our program,” Adair said. “Courtney will bring a toughness and competitive spirit to the team. Her ability to score facing up and around the rim will pose difficulties for any opponent. In addition to her court skills, Courtney is very successful academically. I can’t wait to get Courtney and her future teammates on the court with our team.”

During the season Gardner was honored with the Gwinnet Dailey Post Fan Choice Player of the Week Award following a week in which she scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a win over Rockdale County and scored her 1,000th career points against Archer.

Her coach, Scott Terry talked about Gardner and her ability to transition to the point guard role in a time of need for her team.

"Courtney has been an integral part of our success over the last four years and I'm very happy for her in reaching the 1,000-point milestone for her career,” Terry said. “This season, due to the loss of our point guard to injury, we've had to call on Courtney to play out of position for most of the season. She has taken that challenge as an opportunity and has played very well these last couple of weeks."

Later in the season Gardner secured the team’s seventh straight state tournament berth as she tallied a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds in a victory over Dacula in the quarterfinals of the Region 8-AAAAA girl’s tournament.

Following her senior season Gardner was named First Team All-Region and was selected for the Gwinnet All-Star Game. She played AAU basketball for FBC Elite and was coached on the team by Brian Harmon.

Gardner is the daughter of Lisa and Greg Gardner and led her team in points, rebounds and assists, while maintaining a 3.3 GPA. Gardner said she would like to major in biology at the College of Charleston.

Gardner joins Jasmine Carter from Lexington, N.C. and Breanna Bolden from Edgewater, Md., in the class of 2013.
