Softball Splits with UNC Greensboro on Senior Day
The teams conclude the series with a single game on Sunday, April 22 scheduled for 1 p.m.
All of the Cougar runs came with two outs in the fifth inning of both games.
Since this was the final home series for the team, the Cougars celebrated Senior Day and commemorated the playing career of Amanda Lonergan (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) as well as volunteer assistant coach Jake Jury.
Lonergan celebrated in her own way as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the second game.
Kelsey Hodgson (Woodstock, Ga.) accounted for the Cougars' three remaining RBIs on the day with a pair of hits.
Hope Klicker (Walla Walla, Wash.) went the distance and earned the complete-game shutout in game two.
GAME ONE: CofC: 2, UNC Greensboro: 5
Game one was a pitchers' duel until the Cougars finally got on the board in the fifth but then UNCG responded with a crooked number in their next half inning.
The Cougars scored with back-to-back singles from Ashton Jarrett (Hanahan, S.C.) and Carly Corthell (Reno, Nev.) and then a two-RBI single from Hodgson which allowed both of the speedy base runners to score.
UNCG also put their first two hitters aboard in the sixth and then Eileen Horsman and Katelyn Bedwell hit back-to-back home runs to make the score 4-2. Heather Robb got aboard later in the frame and worked her way around the bases without the ball leaving the infield for the Spartans' fifth run.
GAME TWO: CofC: 2, UNC Greensboro: 0
The second game, like the first, also featured shut-down pitching until the Cougars scored twice in the fifth but this time the Cougars retained the lead until the end.
Corthell started the rally and Lizzy Vaughn (Placerville, Calif.) executed the sacrifice to move her up to second for Hodgson who delivered a two-out double over the head of the centerfielder. Lonergan then singled to center to plate Hodgson and make the score 2-0, the eventual final.
