2009 Record: 23-26, 14-9 (2nd in Southern Conference)

CofC takes on the Seahawks following a series victory over Western carolina this past weekend. After dropping a 7-1 decision in Game 1, the Cougars posted a 7-2 victory in the second game before powering their way to an impressive 17-3 win in the series finale.

The Catamounts took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the series opener before redshirt-junior catcher Katie Pesature (Brewster, N.Y.) ripped the first of two doubles and scored on an errant throw to make it 2-1. WCU worked around several threats from the Cougars to maintain that lead before putting the game out of reach in the fifth inning with four runs on five hits. They would add a run in the sixth to make it 7-1 and then hold on for the six run victory.

It was a far different result in the second game as redshirt-senior second baseman Amber Shifflett (Virginia Beach, Va.) slashed a leadoff homerun over the right field fence to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. She would strike again in the second inning as she belted a two-run shot in almost the exact same place to make it 3-0.

Sophomore outfielder Amanda Lonergan (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) then followed suit in the third as she powered a two-run blast for her team-leading fifth of the season. Amber Shifflett then made her mark again, lacing a double in the sixth for her career-best fourth RBI of the game. Her sister, senior designated player Kristie Shifflett (Virginia Beach, Va.), then brought her in to score on a sacrifice fly, giving the College of Charleston a 7-0 lead. The Catamounts would manage a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-2 but would get no closer.

In the series finale, CofC pounded out 16 hits and scored a season-high 17 runs to notch the 17-3 victory. Three runs in the first and a pair of runs in the second gave the Cougars a solid 5-1 advantage before Western Carolina inched to within 5-2 with a run in the fifth. With the score at 7-3 following a pair of RBIs by sophomore third baseman Katie Forbes (Odessa, Fla.) and junior shortstop Hillary Stringer (Summerville, S.C.) and a Catamount run in the fifth inning, the College of Charleston put the game well out of reach.

The Cougars erupted for ten runs over the final two innings, notching three in the sixth and pushing across seven on five hits in the seventh, to close out a 17-3 victory.

Senior designated hitter Kristie Shifflett (Virginia Beach, Va.) has been an offensive force for the College of Charleston as she continues to lead the team in batting average (.388), slugging percentage (.635), on-base percentage (.538), hits (33) and doubles (10) and is tied for second with 17 RBIs.
