CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team and head coach Shelly Hoerner have announced the 2013 spring playing schedule. The schedule features 23 games at Patriots Point in addition to two annual home tournaments and culminates with the Southern Conference Championship in Greensboro, N.C.
Consistent with CofC continually challenging some of the best competition in the country, Hoerner has pitted the Cougars against seven different teams which qualified for last year’s NCAA Tournament.
“The players and I are extremely excited about the 2013 season,” said Hoerner. “We have a very challenging non-conference schedule which we plan to use to prepare us for the rigors of the always-demanding SoCon slate. The Southern Conference is a battle every weekend. Every team continues to get better year in and year out because of the quality coaching around the league. I look forward to another tough run in the SoCon this year.
“The better competition we play, the stronger it makes our team. We need to be mentally tougher than we have been in the past so we can achieve our ultimate goal, post season play. To be able to host powerhouses like Tennessee and Mississippi State in our hometown is very exciting. 2013 should be an exciting year for the Cougars!”
The season gets under way on Valentine’s Day Eve as the Cougars square off with crosstown-rival Charleston Southern on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at Patriots Point.
CofC then hosts the first of two yearly tournaments, the CofC Classic at Patriots Point which will bring in Syracuse, East Tennessee State University, James Madison, Akron and Towson over the weekend of Feb. 15-17.
Next South Carolina State comes to town for a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
The following weekend, Feb. 25-27, the Cougars host their second annual tournament and welcome Charleston Southern, Radford, South Carolina and Wagner.
The Cougars then host perennial powerhouse Tennessee for a single game at Patriots Point on Thursday, Feb. 28. Last season, the Volunteers advanced all the way to the College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The team then finally embarks on its first road journey of the season which will land them in Kissimmee, Fla., for the Citrus Classic at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports. The Cougars are slated to play Texas A&M, Georgetown, Hofstra and Louisiana Lafayette, three of which went dancing last spring.
The Cougars then open SoCon play with a three-game set at Furman over the weekend of March 9-10 before returning home to host Mississippi State, another 2012 tournament qualifier, on Thursday, March 14.
It’s back to SoCon play for the Cougars after that with a pair of weekend series at Patriots Point without a midweek game in between as CofC hosts Elon March 16-17 and 2012 SoCon Champion Georgia Southern March 23-24.
The team then once again squares off with Charleston Southern, at their place this time, on Tuesday, March 26 and then heads back to Boone, N.C., where the Cougars made a spirited run to their second consecutive SoCon Championship game last spring. The Cougars play three games with Appalachian State on March 29-30.
Canisius College, Hoerner’s alma mater, comes to Patriots Point for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 2 and then the Cougars make one of the longest treks in the SoCon to Birmingham, Ala., for a three-game set at Samford on April 6-7.
The Cougars will hit Raleigh, N.C., for a doubleheader at North Carolina Central on Wednesday, April 10 before returning to Patriots Point to host Chattanooga for three games on April 13-14.
Then, it’s back on the road for the Cougars who head to South Carolina State for an April 16 doubleheader; back home to host Savannah State on Thursday, April 18; then on the road again to challenge Coastal Carolina in the final non-conference contests of the season on April 23.
The Cougars are home on April 27-28 to host Western Carolina for a three-game set with Saturday, April 27 serving as CofC’s Senior Day.
The Cougars conclude the regular season at UNC Greensboro on May 4-5 and then remain in Greensboro, N.C., for the SoCon Championships which commence on Wednesday, May 8 and culminates with the championship game(s) on Saturday, May 11.
