The Cougars are currently in second place in the SoCon standings with a 6-2 (.750) record, but the Mountaineers are lurking closely behind at 6-3 (.667). Depending on other weekend results around the league, this series’ winner will find itself in prime position near the top of the standings as SoCon play nears the halfway point.
The Cougars have enjoyed success against the Apps with a 32-9 record heading into the 42nd meeting in the all-time series. Last season, the Cougars dominated the season series to the tune of a three-game sweep by an aggregate score of 16-4.
The Cougars are coming off a midweek doubleheader split at Charleston Southern on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars came from behind to take game one, 2-1, but fell in too deep of a hole to come back in a 6-4 game two loss.
Sophomore Hope Klicker (Walla Walla, Wash.) was dominant once again in the circle as she threw her ninth complete game of the season in game one. She fanned a season-high 12 hitters while allowing just two hits and two walks.
Also in game one, Carly Corthell (Reno, Nev.) and Allison Pedigo (Scottsville, Ky.) each had an RBI to spring the Cougars to victory. Corthell and Lizzy Vaughn (Placerville, Calif.) both had two hits from the top of the Cougar lineup to account for four of six Cougar hits.
The Cougars outhit the Bucs, 10-6, in game two, but a four-run CSU first inning paced the game and was ultimately too much for the Cougars to overcome. Kelsey Hodgson (Woodstock, Ga.) hit her eighth homerun of the season to bring the Cougars within striking distance in the fifth, but the Cougars would never get closer despite putting five runners aboard between the sixth and seventh innings.
Hodgson has led the Cougars offensively this season and continues to produce in the three-hole of the lineup. She is now batting a team-high .347 on the year with 22 RBIs. Her eight homeruns rank third in the league while her .787 slugging percentage is the league’s fourth-best mark. The junior third baseman has gone yard four times in the last seven games and has amassed 17 hits in the past 14 contests.
Chandler Frisbie (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is batting .311 on her freshman season with 15 RBIS and seven extra-base hits, including two homers.
Klicker has now thrown nine complete games in the circle this season and struck out 83 hitters against 21 walks in 84.0 innings.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
Appalachian split with Winthrop in a midweek doubleheader before going dropping two of three against Chattanooga in a SoCon series this past weekend. The Apps were swept in the Saturday doubleheader on March 23 before bouncing back on Sunday to take game three of the series from the Mocs.
Allie Cashion leads the charge for Appalachian offensively with a .397 batting average and a .778 slugging percentage. Cashion’s nine doubles on the season ranks her tied for second in the SoCon, while her 49 total bases ties her for seventh in the conference.
Sarah Warnock leads the team in hits at 29 and hit her third homerun of the season to help the Apps to the 5-1 game three win over UTC.
ASU is out-hitting opponents 175-145, while posting a .275 team batting average and keeping competition to a .240 batting average.
The Mountaineers are unbeaten at home this season but have only hosted three games at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium this year. They have not lost a regular-season home game since April 21, 2012 when they dropped the doubleheader against Georgia Southern.
