CHRISTIANSBURG, VA. - In their opening meets of the season, the College of Charleston swimming and diving teams fell to Virginia Tech while beating Radford. The women handled Radford, 210-87 but were edged by the Hokies by a 173-106 mark. The men's team only swam the Hokies and fell, 168-110.
The Cougars were dominant in the ladder stages of the meet and won nine out of the final 10 events. The Cougars had 10 first-place finishers altogether and swept the top three finishes five different times.
Women's Highlights
In the first event of the day, the 200-yard medley relay team consisting of Sarah Boyle, Jackie Tully, Courtney Monsees and Raquel Rudolph.
Boyle also won the 100-yard backstroke (59.81) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.26).
Gracie Herlong won the 500-yard freestyle with a nearly 10-second cushion when she posted a 5:28.93 time.
Casey Sweeney led the way in a sweep of the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:15.83 time, followed by April Coyne (2:17.31) and Herlong (2:18.68).
CofC won the 200-yard freestyle relay with Meredith Smith, Haley Horkey, Monsees and Rudolph posting a 1:42.09.
Men's Highlights
Matt Sherrier headlined a sweep of the men's 500-yard freestyle event with a 4:44.32 time, pairing with Eric Craig and Dannon James who posted times of 4:53.06 and 5:23.38.
The men also swept the 100-yard butterfly event, led by David Sherrier (52.48), Patrick Jones (53.91) and Nick Puciaty (56.78).
Peter Gibbons bested the three-meter diving event with a 233.5 mark.
The Cougars swept the 200-yard individual medley on the men's side as well, with Patrick Foos (2:04.83), Evan Renn (2:08.98) and Nick Alonso (2:10.15).
Greg Karel, David Sherrier, Matt Sherrier and Patrick Jones teamed to win the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 1:26.77 time.
