CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The College of Charleston men's and women's swimming and diving teams both took first place in the 2010 Fall Frenzy hosted by Wingate University.
The women's team finished first in a ten-team field with 810 points, edging second-place Wingate with 754 points. Also competing were SCAD (561), Converse College (393), Catawba College (317), Mars Hill (238.5), Limestone (193.5), Pfeiffer (133), Queens University (122) and Lenoir Rhyne (43).
The men racked up 668 points en route to victory over their nine-team field, narrowly edging SCAD (665) by three points followed by Wingate (649.5), Queens (457), Limestone (436.5), Mars Hill (378), Pfeiffer (239.5), Catawba (60.5) and Lenoir Rhyne (11).
"We had a great meet with both the men & women winning the Invite," said head coach Bruce Zimmerman. "We swam exceptionally well with the majority of the swims being season best times.
"This meet was our last competition of the fall semester and we were focused on swimming fast and winning the meet. We accomplished both. After six consecutive weekends with meets on the road, the team is very tired.
"To swim as well as they did is a testament to their hard work and commitment to excel."
Sarah Boyle won the 200-yard IM even with a 2:12.18 mark. Boyle was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke (59.69) as well as the 200-yard backstroke and set the new CofC school record in that event (2:07.15).
Herlong took second place in the 100-yard butterfly (58.69) and won the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.88).
Smith was the victor in the 200-yard freestyle event at 1:55.01 and placed second in the 100-yard freestyle at 53.71.
The Cougars got second place in the 800-yard freestyle relay event with a 7:59.87 time (Horkey, Elizabeth Berry, Herlong and Smith).
April Coyne won the 200-yard breaststroke event by posting a 2:28.01 time.
The women won the 400-yard freestyle relay event at 3:38.14 (Rudolph, Boyle, Horkey and Smith).
Matt Sherrier took second place in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:44.25 time.
