Sarah Graif Sets School Record In Second Day Of Wingate Fall Frenzy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - College of Charleston swimming put forth a number of good performances in Saturday's second day of the Wingate Fall Frenzy, but none was better than freshman Sarah Graif's new school record.

Graif, coming off winning the school's first women's CCSA swimmer of the week award, eclipsed the school record in the 50 free in the morning prelims with a time of 23.85. She then went on to swim a time of 23.72 in the finals last night to take first place and secure her place in the school record books.

Freshman Jayme Groth and Mary Frances Babrowicz placed second (23.80) and fourth (24.50), respectively.

Junior Gracie Herlong took second place in the 100-yard butterfly (58.23), while sophomore Sarah Boyle placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (58.63). Meredith Smith also scored points for the Cougars with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.08).

On the men's side, Pablo Ortiz finished second in the 400-yard IM (4:06.09), and Chris Verbonceour came in third in the 100-yard butterfly (51.26). Matt Sherrier placed sixth in the 200 free (1:41.65), and Michael McCarthy finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (51.99).

The Cougars scored points in both sets of relays with the men's ‘A' team taking third (3:09.85) in the 400 free relay and third (1:34.67) in the 200 medley relay. The women's ‘A' teams took third (3:33.56) in the 400 free relay, and fifth (1:50.59) in the 200 medley relay.

At the end of the second day, the men's team remained in first place with 468. The women's team was in second place behind Gardner-Webb with 490.
