CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The College of Charleston men's swimmers defended their Wingate Fall Frenzy title with another first place finish in the 2011 event in Charlotte, N.C.

The men scored 797 points, over 100 more than second-place Queens University. The women's squad came in second place with 820 points behind first-place Gardner-Webb.

After setting a new school record in the 50-yard freestyle on Saturday, freshman Sarah Graif continued her outstanding weekend by setting a new school record in the 100-yard freestyle on Sunday, taking first place with a time of 51.75.

Freshman Jayme Groth came in behind Graif in the 100 free with a third-place time of 52.57.

Although the Cougars did not win too many first-place event titles, the depth of College of Charleston in each event led to the Cougars' high point totals.

In the 200 IM, sophomore Sarah Boyle came in sixth (2:11.85), followed by Madison Tarleton (2:13.15) and Gracie Herlong (2:13.68). Boyle also took fifth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.16). In the men's 200 IM event, freshman Pablo Ortiz finished fourth (1:55.50) and Chris Verbonceour (1:55.63) came in right behind him.

Senior Matt Sherrier placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.33), while Megan Melville placed fifth in the women's 500 free (5:15.25).

Though swimming in separate heats, Jackson Marine, Mike McCarthy and Zack Lambert placed fourth (1:55.08), fifth (1:55.61) and sixth (1:55.62) in the 200-yard backstroke.

Senior Brantley Reynolds took a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.70), while Ortiz took second place in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.58).

The Cougars took first place in the women's 200-yard free relay (1:35.80) and second place in the men's 200 free relay (1:24.96).

This weekend's three-day meet was the last for College of Charleston in the calendar year. College of Charleston will make its run to the CCSA Championships beginning in the first week of January.
