Cremins schedules press conference for this afternoon

March 19, 2012

Cougars' head coach Bobby Cremins will hold a press conference at 3:15 p.m. this afternoon, the College of Charleston announced this morning.

Cremins said in an interview last week that he would announce his decision regarding his tenure as head coach of the basketball team, perhaps as early as this week.

Cremins, who has been on a medical leave of absence for exhaustion since Jan. 27, has been working at the school daily since the middle of last week.

"Whatever decision I make not only has to be good for Bobby Cremins, it has to be great for the College of Charleston," he said.

Mark Byington took over as interim head coach and finished out the year 7-4 for an overall record of 19-12.

Byington said he and the rest of the staff have tried to take a "business as usual" approach until Cremins makes his decision. They have been on the road recruiting, trying to add one more player for next season.

Cougars’ Christian Powell off to great start

Tommy Braswell

March 16, 2012

MOUNT PLEASANT -- College of Charleston pitcher Christian Powell is living up to the preseason billing.

Powell, a junior right-hander from Greenwood, was a preseason first-team All-Southern Conference pick. He's off to a 3-1 start with a league-leading 0.70 ERA for the Cougars (12-5).

"I started him every weekend when he was a true freshman and I think taking those lumps paved the way for him to develop into what he is now," College of Charleston coach Monte Lee said. "He was really good for us last year (8-1, 3.09 ERA), an all-conference starter. And this year I'd say he's one of the best starters in our whole league."

Powell attributes his success to "putting my fastball on both sides of the plate and getting my breaking ball in the zone. For the most part, I've been getting ahead of hitters," he said.

The Cougars' pitching staff has been solid, but Lee isn't happy with the team's run production or the defensive play.

After going 5-0 last week, the Cougars are 0-2 this week heading into a weekend Southern Conference series against Wofford at Patriots Point (today's game is at 6 p.m.). Charleston lost at home Tuesday to UNC Wilmington, and then lost at Coastal Carolina.

"Our pitching staff allows us to be in every ballgame," Lee said. "We're better (offensively) than our numbers indicate. We've got some guys in the lineup that haven't started hitting yet."

Lee said the Cougars need to get back on the right track against Wofford (8-9).

"Coming back from two mid-week losses, I'm looking for our guys to play a little bit harder, to have a little bit more of a sense of urgency," Lee said.
