NORFOLK, Va. - The sixth-ranked College of Charleston sailing team was crowned the Szambecki Team Race champions on Sunday.
CofC, which finished a couple of points short of Georgetown a year ago for second place, defeated the competitive eight-team field with a 6-1 record after the final round ahead of No. 10 Hobart & William Smith (6-1), No. 9 St. Mary's College of Maryland (5-2), No. 3 Roger Williams (2-5), No. 2 Georgetown (3-4), No. 12 Old Dominion (3-4), No. 14 Navy (2-5) and No. 7 Stanford (1-6).
The Cougars dominated out of the gate leading after day one with a 4-1 record ahead of host ODU on Saturday. Two complete round robins were completed over the course of the two days of competition despite unfavorable weather conditions.
"It was great to get the win this weekend," CofC Head Coach Ward Cromwell said. "There are lot of schools that are really talented and we are one of them. We will keep working hard. We have another big event next weekend and are looking forward to matching up against the New England schools."
The Cougars were led to victory by All-American skipper Zeke Horowitz (Sarasota, Fla.), junior crew Cory DeCollibus (Duxbury, Mass.), junior crew Brooks Clark (Newport Beach, Calif.), junior All-American skipper Mac Mace (Newport Beach, Calif.), senior All-American crew Perry Emsiek (Corona del Mar, Calif.), senior crew Sam Stokes (Norfolk, Va.), junior skipper Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.), senior All-American crew Alyssa Aitken (Sandwich, Mass.) and junior crew Jeff Aschieris (Newport Beach, Calif.).
