CHARLESTON, S.C. - The second-ranked College of Charleston coed sailing team won its seventh regatta of the spring season with a first-place victory at the SAISA Team Race Championships hosted by Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Cougars qualified for the team racing nationals by going an undefeated 12-0 in a triple round robin race against second-place South Florida (8-4), third-place Miami (5-7), fourth-place Eckerd (5-7) and fifth-place Clemson (0-12). They previously won the 2011 Marchiando Team Race in Boston last weekend.
CofC also placed sixth at the 2011 Women's Emily Wick/Sloop Shrew regatta hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Skippers Corey Hall (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Carly Shevitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) along with crew Sarah Scudder (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) scored 140 points for ninth place in the A-Division followed by freshman skipper Grace Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) and sophomore crew Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) with 103 points in the B-Division for seventh.
The Cougars will next compete on April 23-24 at the Admiral's Cup hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King's Point, N.Y., and the SAISA Women's Championships hosted by South Florida in Tampa, Fla.
