MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The No. 2-ranked College of Charleston coed sailing team placed third at the home-hosted Bob Bavier Team Race regatta held over the weekend at the newly-renovated J. Stewart Walker Sailing Center.
In the team racing event, the Cougars finished with a 21-6 overall record behind first-place and No. 4-ranked Yale (23-4) and second-place and No. 9-ranked Stanford (22-5). No. 7 Georgetown (16-11) and No. 13 Navy (16-111) rounded out the top 5 of the 10-team regatta field.
On Day One, sailors were greeted by winds 8-15 knots out of the Northwest. Eighty races were completed in an ebb tide and sailed using the Cooper River cross current double-modified port triangle.
On Day Two, racing was sailed in a nice shifty 8-12 mph Northeast breeze with temperatures in the low 50s. The college North race course was moved to the South to the Crab Bank area for current relief and as clean of breeze as possible.
Five of CofC's J/22's were used to transport schools waiting to rotate. The remainder of round robin two and round robin three were completed for an overall total of 136 races (including one resailed race).
The Cougars were represented in the race by junior All-American Christopher "Mac" Mace (Newport Beach, Calif.), senior All-American Perry Emsiek (Corona del Mar, Calif.) and junior Jeff Aschieris (Newport Beach, Calif.), senior Zeke Horowitz (Sarasota, Fla.), junior Cory DeCollibus (Duxbury, Mass.) and junior Brooks Clark (Newport Beach, Calif.), and junior Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.), senior All-American Alyssa Aitken (Sandwich, Mass.) and senior Sam Stokes (Norfolk, Va.). Also competing were junior Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) and sophomore Carly Shevitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.).
CofC tied Yale and Stanford after the first round robin with a 7-2 record with wins over Clemson, Eckerd College, Georgetown, Navy, Miami (Fla.), St. Mary's College of Maryland and Wisconsin. The Cougars also went 7-2 in the second and third round robins.
"The Bob Bavier went really well this weekend," CofC Head Coach Ward Cromwell said. "Coach Greg (Fisher) got off a 136 races with one resail. All of our kids really chipped in to run a great event. We sailed on the crab bank with the J/22's and it was a great job to get in that many races. It was a great start to the team-racing portion of our season."
Up next, the Cougars will sail in four regattas at the Graham Hall Team Race hosted by Navy on March 3-4 in Annapolis, Md., the Eckerd Intersectional hosted by Eckerd College on March 3-4 in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the North Points #2 regatta hosted by Clemson on March 3 in Clemson, S.C. CofC will also play host to the Charleston Women's Intersectional on March 3-4 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Center.
