Wilmington's Aldrich wins CPL home run derby

For the second time in July, Daniel Aldrich put on an impressive power display, this time tying a Coastal Plain League home run derby record with 18 over three rounds at J.P. Riddle Stadium on Sunday.
Aldrich, a member of the Wilmington Sharks who earned national freshman of the year honors as a College of Charleston outfielder, also won the TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby in front of more than 20,000 fans in Omaha, Neb. He used a powerful, non-BBCOR aluminum bat in that competition, and Sunday's derby was his first involving wood bats.
"Every time you're still nervous at the beginning, but I've done a lot of these," Aldrich said. "I got relaxed and got in a groove."

New draftees start pro careers

While many of us have been on vacation in recent weeks, newly drafted baseball players have signed contracts and begun their professional careers.
Here's a roundup of how Lowcountry products, and players from Clemson and South Carolina, have started in pro ball:
--Left-handed pitcher Matt Talley (The Citadel), a 28th-round pick by Atlanta, was assigned to the Braves' affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. He pitched his first five games out of the bullpen, going 1-0 with an 0.69 ERA in 13 innings.
--Matt Leeds, an All-American third baseman at College of Charleston, has been moved to first base by the Rangers, who drafted him in the 31st round. Leeds is batting .256 with three homers and 16 RBIs in his first 19 games for the Rangers' affiliate in the rookie Arizona League.

Top o' the late morning to you on Open Championship weekend. The wind is brisk in England, but the coffee here is just right.
Our guest today is 19-year-old Alex Ellis, who won the Firecracker earlier this month with rounds of 68-66-66 at Lions Municipal Golf Course. Ellis played on two state championship teams for Callan Nokes at Westlake High School. He now plays for former Austin resident, Texas Longhorn and Firecracker champion Mark McEntire at the College of Charleston, where Ellis played in 12 tournaments and finished third on the team in stroke average (75.31).

Henry Smart of Banstead Downs Golf Club wins The Tillman Trophy 2011

Henry Smart of Banstead Downs Golf Club, who started the final round five strokes in arrears, has won The Tillman Trophy 2011 at Hunstanton Golf Club earlier today.
Smart, fired a final round of 67 for a total score of 282, to snatch victory ahead of runner-up Garrick Porteous (71) of Bamburgh Castle Golf Club, who finished on 284.

Three Sharks make CPL All-Star roster

The Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League are proud to announce that three players - Daniel Aldrich, Justyn Carter and Jake Mayers - have been selected as 2011 CPL All-Stars and will travel to Fayetteville to play in the CPL's 13th annual All-Star Game on Monday, July 18.

Winner of Firecracker Open has bright future in golf

Alex Ellis played well in the Firecracker Open last year, but missed the tournament's playoffs by one shot.
His Westlake teammate at the time, Stratton Nolen, ultimately claimed the 2010 title.
"For so long, I've wanted to win," Ellis said. "I don't know if I could have taken another loss."
This year, he won the tournament by three shots over golfer Mike Allen. The victory puts him in one of the most exclusive clubs in Austin golf.

Daniel Aldrich had a season any college baseball player would envy.
The College of Charleston standout knocked it out of the park 22 times this season, and he got accolades galore, including being named to the All-Southern Conference first team.
But the big one came last week when the Mount Pleasant native captured the 2011 TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby title in front of 20,000 fans in Omaha, Neb.

Andrew Goudelock Headed For The L.A. Lakers

June 23, 2011 was a banner day for former College of Charleston guard Andrew Goudelock. The Southern Conference Player of the Year woke up like many college basketball players, hopeful he would be drafted into the NBA. By the time he went to sleep that night he found out he was going to suit up for the Los Angeles Lakers.
