Seymour I. Barkowitz, Class of '47 (Basketball)

Seymour Barkowitz, captain for the 1946-47 CofC varsity men's basketball squad, was a hulking force who had returned from the war after starting for the Maroons in the early '40s. He was an honors graduate of the College of Charleston and later attended Columbia University. Barkowitz served as student body president and was a Ford Foundation Fellowship Award recipient. He was described by the institution's president as "one of the outstanding personalities to graduate in recent years" and was very active on campus as an officer in a large list of clubs and societies. A military veteran from 1943-46, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
