Dr. Leroy Bates was an outstanding member of the CofC men's basketball and tennis teams for four years. He was the leading scorer in basketball for three years and was captain and a First Team All-State selection in 1941-42 for the 9-9 Maroons which won five-straight games to open the season. The center was the third-leading vote getter for the all-state team and averaged 12 points per game
