MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Freshman Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) clinched the deciding match point as the College of Charleston women's tennis team rolled to a 4-3 decision over Iowa State on Friday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
With the score tied at 3-all, it would come down to the last match standing between Maddox and Iowa State's Meghan Cassens at No. 4 singles. After splitting sets, Maddox gave up only one game in the final third set, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, to seal the victory for the Cougars (3-2), who have now won two in a row.
After losing the doubles point, the Cyclones (0-6) battled back from a 3-0 deficit beginning with a straight-set win from Ksenia Pronina over CofC sophomore Kelly Kambourelis, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 line, which shifted the momentum. Iowa State's Simona Cacciuttolo followed with a straight-set victory over junior Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) at No. 3 and Emma Waites beat junior Olivia McMillan (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) in straight sets at No. 6, to set the stage for the clincher.
The Cougars had built the early cushion courtesy of freshman Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.), who handily defeated Jenna Langhorst, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, and junior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.), who topped Maria Macedo by the same count, at the top of the order.
"Iowa State is a very talented team that will do well in the Big 12 Conference this year," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "Their team showed great resolve in coming back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the match at 3-all. Sam Maddox closed out the match for us, winning 6-1 in the third set, earning her third-consecutive victory along with fellow freshman Jenny Falcone. They continue to improve each match."
The Cougars cancelled their match against Stetson which was scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Live To Play Tennis Center in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., due to forecasted weather conditions.
