TUCSON, Ariz. - College of Charleston moved into the 29th spot of the first Collegiate Baseball poll of the 2012 regular season. The Cougars were previously ranked 32nd in Collegiate Baseball's Preseason Poll.
The Cougars are coming off a three-game sweep of South Alabama on the road on opening weekend. The CofC pitching staff was dominant, allowing just five runs, two earned, against the Jaguars and shutting out South Alabama in the seven-inning finale.
Junior Christian Powell pitched six innings of two-hit ball and combined with Dre Watts to get the shutout, 3-0, in the final game of the set on Sunday. In the first game of the double-header, junior Matt Pegler gave up three runs in the first inning before combining with the Cougar bullpen to shut down the Jaguars for the rest of the game to win, 6-3. Senior Josh Renfro tallied eight strikeouts in a no-decision on Friday night.
Offensively, senior Marty Gantt led the way for Charleston as he went 6-of-11 on the weekend with five runs, two RBI and two stolen bases. Redshirt-sophomore Daniel Aldrich hit his first home run of the season on Sunday, while junior Cody Martin blasted a three-run, pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning on Friday to win the opener.
College of Charleston will host Rhode Island, Xavier and Connecticut this weekend in the Cougar Invitational.
