Cougars Overcome by VT 7-0 in Blacksburg

Blacksburg, Va. – The College of Charleston suffered a 7-0 setback to Virginia Tech on Tuesday, falling to 4-3 on the season.

The Cougars dropped a pair of 6-2 matches in the second and third sets of doubles. Juan Estevarena and Vasily Kichigin looked poised to pull off the win in the top flight with a 5-3 lead over Abraham Asaba and Jai Corbett. However, once with the doubles point concluded, the match was left unfinished.

Jake Kusmider made collegiate tennis history in the sixth flight, becoming the first player to use the Playsight video system to successfully a challenge a call, which led to a game-winning point. However, the freshman ultimately couldn't withstand Freddy Mesmer, falling 6-3, 6-4.

The Cougars saw tight matches in all of the top three singles flights. Juan Estevarena played the No. 49 ranked Jai Corbett tightly before falling 7-5, 6-3. Benedikt Henning took Alex Ribeiro to a tiebreak before succumbing 6-4, 7-6(1), while Kichigin played Mitch Harper to three sets before going down 7-6, 1-6, 10-4.

The Cougars are finished with competition for the remainder of February. They will return to action on March 5th and 7th for a two-match swing in Louisiana with Nicholls State and New Orleans.
