Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Sydney Shipley allowed only two hits in a 2-0 win in the opening game before the College of Charleston won a back-and-forth 6-5 contest in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader against Charleston Southern on Wednesday night at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (19-12) extended their hot streak to 11 wins in their last 14 games and moved a season-best seven games over .500. CofC has won 11 in a row over CSU (16-24) dating back to the 2014 season.
Shipley (6-3) turned in her third straight impressive performance, limiting the Bucs to two singles, matching her season high with six strikeouts against only one walk and retiring 12 in a row at one point. She ran into trouble in the seventh when the first two CSU batters reached, but she struck out Cheyenne Gandara and was helped by her defense when Sara Garcia threw out Stevi Johnson trying to advance to second on a fly out to right for a game-ending double play.
Including a pair of starts last weekend against Elon, Shipley has allowed only 11 hits and two runs (one earned) in 21 innings in her last three appearances.
CofC scored an unearned run in the first and made it 2-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Jordin Jones, increasing her team-leading RBI total to 21. Taylor DuPree had two of the Cougars' six hits.
The nightcap saw the Cougars jump out to an early lead on a three-run homer to left center by Taylor Belfiore, who broke a tie with Jones for the team lead in that department with five. But a three-error second inning allowed CSU to score four unanswered runs against starter Sam Martin.
The teams traded runs their next time up with CofC tying it in the bottom of the second on consecutive doubles by Dana Horgan and Madi Brown, and CSU going back ahead 5-4 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Mallory Kasinger. The inning could have been worse for the Cougars, but Brown made a running catch in right center before crashing into the fence to strand a pair of runners.
CofC went ahead to stay in its half of the third on a two-run single by Horgan, and the combination of Martin and Izzy Berouty kept the Bucs off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Berouty relieved Martin with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth and got a force play at the plate and a strikeout to escape that jam.
Berouty then allowed singles in the sixth and seventh but was helped out by her defense, particularly on tough grounders that Horgan and DuPree turned into outs to finish off the win. Berouty earned her third save of the year while Martin won for the fifth time.
The Cougars return to Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend with a three-game road series against 11th-ranked and defending conference champion James Madison.
