CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (6-8-3, 3-3-2) finished the 2025 season with a 2-1 win over UNCW (5-8-2, 4-4) at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point Saturday night.
Applying pressure early, the Cougars took the first two shots of the game within the first seven minutes of action.
As UNCW gained its footing, sophomore Matt Lenert intercepted a Seahawks pass and was off to the races. Lenert made a defender miss and snuck the ball under the outstretched arm of the goalie and into the back of the net to put the Cougars in front 1-0 in the 23rd minute.
Charleston controlled much of the first half, outshooting UNCW five to three, while both teams had two corners through the first 45 minutes.
Coming out of the break needing a goal to tie and improve their playoff seeding, the Seahawks took the first four shots of the second stanza, but still remained scoreless. UNCW continued to apply pressure as the Seahawks tied the game in the 65th minute with a quick strike off a free kick just outside the box.
After stopping UNCW on three more scoring attempts, the Cougars went to the bench as they looked for a spark with the game still knotted 1-all with less than 11 minutes to go. Subbing into the game late and playing in just his eighth game all season, junior Ezequiel Emanuele Goetzke provided the spark CofC needed. The midfielder from Ecuador gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute as he sent a free kick into the back of the net for his first-career goal.
Goetzke's goal proved to be the game-winner as Charleston held UNCW off the board for the final four minutes of the game.
The Seahawks outshot the Cougars 12-7, but junior goalkeeper Charlie Duske was able to make two saves as he earned his first win of the year.
SEASON RECAP — Charleston ends the year with a (6-8-3) record after Saturday night's 2-1 win. During the 2025 campaign, Charleston shutout two top-15 teams and had the No. 1 play on the SportsCenter Top 10 list on October 25.
CofC defeated No. 15 North Carolina 2-0 on September 1 and earned a 1-0 shutout over No. 15 Furman on September 16. Noah Gold and Lennon Gill combined for the No. 1 play on SportsCenter via two bicycle kicks. In a matchup against William & Mary, Gold sent a bicycle pass into the box where Gill found the back of the net with a bicycle of his own.
